Out of January cold comes great music

By: Rachael Mattice

January brings transitions both positive and negative – people are inspired with resolutions for the upcoming year, but there also are post-holiday blues with some of the most bitter freezing temperatures and snowstorms clouding moods.

However dreary January can be, great music has been brought into the world in this month for decades. Some of the world’s most accomplished musicians were born in the determined and creative zodiacs of Capricorn and Aquarius.

It’s hard to believe that Elvis, Janis Joplin, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Zakk Wylde, Rob Zombie, John Paul
Jones, Jimmy Page, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Justin Timberlake, Pat Benatar, Crystal Gayle, Dave
Grohl, Rod Stewart, Paul Stanley and Richie Havens all were born in this month.

But your name does not have to be as recognized as theirs to appreciate the local entertainment that thrives in sub-zero temperatures.

Here are some acts to catch this weekend and new album releases that hold true to the virtuosity of January:
